How to play Typing Test

  1. 1
    Pick a duration
Choose 15, 30, or 60 seconds. Shorter runs measure your burst speed; 60 seconds is the standard for a settled, repeatable WPM.
  2. 2
    Start typing the words shown
The timer starts on your first keystroke, not before. Type the words exactly as they appear; correct letters turn one color, mistakes another.
  3. 3
    Press space between words
A space commits the current word and moves you to the next. There's no need to fix every typo, but uncorrected mistakes lower your accuracy.
  4. 4
    Watch WPM and accuracy live
Your words per minute and accuracy update as you go, so you can feel when you're pushing too hard and dropping letters.
  5. 5
    See your result
When the clock hits zero we show your net WPM, raw WPM, and accuracy. Beat your personal best and the result pops in for a moment.

Tips & strategy

  • •Accuracy before speed. A clean run at a steady pace almost always beats a frantic one full of corrections.
  • •Don't look at the keyboard. Trusting your fingers is the single biggest jump most people make.
  • •Keep your fingers on the home row (asdf jkl;) and return to it between reaches. Anchored hands type faster.
  • •Practice a little every day. Ten focused minutes beats one long session; muscle memory builds with repetition.
  • •Stay relaxed. Loose wrists and light keypresses are quicker and far less tiring than tense, heavy typing.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed or average WPM?
▼
The average adult types around 40 words per minute. 65 to 80 WPM is considered proficient and is typical for people who type for a living. Anything over 100 WPM is genuinely fast, and competitive typists push past 120.
How is WPM calculated?
▼
One word is counted as five characters, including the spaces between words. Net WPM divides your correctly typed characters by five, then scales to a full minute. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, right or wrong.
Is Melio Typing Test free?
▼
Yes. It's completely free, with no ads in the test and no account or sign-up required. Open the page and start typing.
How can I type faster?
▼
Prioritize accuracy first, learn to touch type without looking down, keep your fingers anchored on the home row, and practice consistently. Speed follows accuracy, not the other way around.
Does it work on mobile?
▼
Yes, the test runs in any modern mobile browser and uses your phone's keyboard. For your truest WPM, though, a physical keyboard on a laptop or desktop is best.
