How to play Spider Solitaire
1
Build the columns down in rank
Stack cards onto the ten tableau columns in descending order, a nine on a ten, an eight on a nine, and so on. Any card can sit on a card one rank higher, no matter the suit.
2
Move same-suit runs together
When a block of cards is all the same suit and runs straight down in rank, you can pick the whole run up and place it as a unit. Mixed-suit stacks have to move one card at a time.
3
Deal a new row when you are stuck
Out of moves? Deal one face-up card onto every column from the stock. You can only deal when no column is empty, so fill any gaps first.
4
Clear a full king-to-ace suit
Assemble a complete run of one suit from king all the way down to ace and it lifts off the board automatically. That is one of eight suits cleared.
5
Win by clearing all eight
Remove every one of the eight king-to-ace suits and the game is won. One-suit games hold eight spade runs, four-suit games hold two of each standard suit.
Tips & strategy
•Work the longest columns first. They hide the most face-down cards, and every card you uncover opens up new plays.
•Expose face-down cards at every chance. A flipped card is new information, and information is what wins Spider.
•Keep a column empty as a workspace when you can. An open column lets you park a run and untangle a messy pile.
•Build in suit whenever you have the choice. Same-suit runs move as a unit and turn into the completed suits that win the game.
•Make every useful move before you deal. A deal drops a card on every column and can bury cards you needed, so squeeze the board dry first.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Spider Solitaire?
▼
Deal ten tableau columns and build them down in rank, any suit on the next higher card. Same-suit runs move together. Deal a new row from the stock when stuck, as long as no column is empty. Clear a full king-to-ace run of one suit to remove it, and win by clearing all eight.
What is 1-suit vs 2-suit vs 4-suit Spider Solitaire?
▼
It is the difficulty. 1-suit uses only spades, so every run is same-suit and easy to move, the friendliest way to learn. 2-suit mixes spades and hearts. 4-suit uses all four suits and is the hardest, because matching suits to build clean runs is much tougher.
Is every Spider Solitaire game winnable?
▼
Not every deal. One-suit games are solvable almost every time with careful play, while four-suit games are won far less often even by strong players. If a deal stalls with no moves and no deals left, start a fresh game.
Is Melio Spider Solitaire free?
▼
Yes. Free, no ads, no account, and it plays in any browser. Pick 1, 2, or 4 suits, and your game in progress and best move count are saved locally on your device.
Can I undo a move in Spider Solitaire?
▼
Yes. Spider keeps a move history, so you can undo and back out of a line that dead-ends. Use it to test a plan and step back if it does not pan out.
