MelioMahjong

Match identical free tiles to clear the layout. Every board is solvable. Tap two matching tiles, no download.

How to play Mahjong Solitaire

  1. 1
    Match identical tiles
Find two tiles of the same kind and tap them to remove the pair. Every tile has three other copies, so each kind clears across two matched pairs.
  2. 2
    Take only free tiles
A tile can be matched only when it is free, meaning nothing is stacked on top of it and at least one side, left or right, is open. Blocked tiles have to be freed first.
  3. 3
    Work the stacks down
Removing free tiles exposes the ones beneath and beside them. Clear the top of a pile and the layer below opens up for new matches.
  4. 4
Clear all 144 tiles to win
Keep pairing free tiles until the whole layout is gone. Remove all 144 and the board is solved.
  5. 5
    Every board is solvable
Each layout Melio deals is built to be winnable, so there is always a path to clear it. Use a hint when you are stuck, or shuffle the remaining tiles as a last resort.

Tips & strategy

  • •Work from the top layer down. The highest tiles block the most pairs, so freeing them first opens up the rest of the board.
  • •Free the most-blocked tiles first. Tiles boxed in on both sides or buried deep are the ones that strand a game, so prioritize opening them.
  • •Do not clear a pair if it traps a tile you still need. Look at what each match exposes before you take it, and leave yourself a way back in.
  • •Keep all four copies of a kind in mind. When three of a kind are showing, match the pair that keeps the last two reachable.
  • •Use a hint when stuck, and shuffle only as a last resort. A shuffle reshuffles the remaining tiles, so spend it only when no free pair is left.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play mahjong solitaire?
▼
Match identical free tiles to remove them from the layout. A tile is free when nothing sits on top of it and at least one side is open. Keep clearing pairs to expose the tiles beneath, and remove all 144 tiles to win.
When is a tile free in mahjong solitaire?
▼
A tile is free when no tile is stacked on top of it and at least one of its sides, left or right, is open. Only free tiles can be matched, so freeing buried tiles is the heart of the puzzle.
Are Melio mahjong boards always solvable?
▼
Yes. Every board is generated to be solvable, so a winning sequence of matches always exists. If you run out of moves, use a hint or shuffle the remaining tiles to keep going.
Is Melio Mahjong free?
▼
Yes. It is completely free, with no ads and no account needed. Play right in your browser on phone or desktop, as many boards as you like.
Can I undo or shuffle in mahjong solitaire?
▼
Yes. You can undo a match to back out of a line, ask for a hint to spot a matchable free pair, and shuffle the remaining tiles when you are stuck with no moves left.
