How to play Minesweeper

  1. 1
    Click any cell to start
Your first click is always safe, the board generates around it so you never lose to luck on move one. The opening also auto-reveals a clearing of empty cells.
  2. 2
    Read the numbers
A revealed number tells you how many mines sit in the eight neighboring cells. A 1 with one unflagged neighbor? That neighbor is the mine.
  3. 3
    Flag the mines
Right-click (or long-press on mobile) any cell you're sure hides a mine. Flagging doesn't reveal, it's a marker for you and for chord-clicking later.
  4. 4
    Chord to clear fast
Click a satisfied number (matching flag count) to auto-reveal all its unflagged neighbors. The fastest way to expand once you've flagged the obvious mines.
  5. 5
Reveal every safe cell to win
You don't have to flag every mine, just uncover every non-mine cell. Hit one mine and the run ends.

Tips & strategy

  • •Open in a corner or edge if you want a smaller clearing; click center for a chance at a bigger opening burst.
  • •A '1' touching exactly one unrevealed cell on the edge of a clearing? That cell is the mine. Flag it immediately.
  • •When two adjacent numbers contradict (a '1' and '2' touching the same unrevealed cluster), subtract to deduce which specific cells are mines.
  • •If you're stuck, count the global mine total against your flag count. The remaining mines have to fit somewhere, sometimes that forces a deduction.
  • •On Expert, learn to recognize the 1-2-1 and 1-2-2-1 patterns along edges. They have fixed solutions and let you flag mines without thinking.

Frequently asked questions

Is Melio Minesweeper free?
▼
Yes. Free, no ads, no account. The classic game in the browser.
What are the difficulty sizes?
▼
Beginner is 9×9 with 10 mines, Intermediate is 16×16 with 40, Expert is 30×16 with 99. Same as the original Windows version.
Is the first click always safe?
▼
Yes. The board generates around your first click so the opener never loses. Many modern versions also guarantee a non-zero starting cell, Melio does the same.
How do I flag a mine on mobile?
▼
Long-press the cell. On desktop, right-click. Toggle a flag mode in the toolbar if you'd rather tap to flag.
Is Minesweeper solvable without guessing?
▼
Most boards are. Some Expert layouts have a forced 50/50 guess late in the game, frustrating but unavoidable on a classic generator.
What's a good Expert time?
▼
Under 100 seconds is solid. Under 50 is excellent. World records sit around 30 seconds, but those require routine practice.
