How to play 2048: rules, controls, and the corner habit
2048 is a tile-sliding number puzzle that made its rounds in 2014 and never really stopped being fun. The rules are dead simple. The strategy is a single habit you can learn in one paragraph.
The rules in 30 seconds
You have a 4×4 grid. Two tiles start on the board, each showing the number 2 (or sometimes 4). You slide the entire board in one of four directions: up, down, left, right.
When two tiles of the same number bump into each other, they merge into a single tile of double the value. Two 2s become a 4. Two 4s become an 8. Eventually two 1024s become 2048, which is the win condition — though most people keep going past it.
After every move, a new tile (a 2 or a 4) appears in a random empty cell. The game ends when the board is full and no merges are possible.
Controls
- Desktop: arrow keys, or WASD.
- Mobile / touch: swipe in the direction you want to slide.
Each input slides every tile as far as it can go in that direction. Tiles don’t pass through other tiles unless they merge.
The one strategy that matters: corner stacking
Pick a corner. Stick with it. The whole game now revolves around keeping your largest tile in that corner.
Most strong 2048 players pick the bottom-left or bottom-right corner. They only press “down” and “left” (or down and right) for the entire game. Up is forbidden. The largest tile lives in the corner and never moves.
Why this works: when you only use two directions, the board organizes itself. Big numbers funnel toward your chosen corner. Smaller numbers stack along the edges in roughly decreasing order. New tiles spawn in the corner opposite yours and feed into the chain. The board reads like a staircase.
The opposite — “just play moves that seem good” — leads to a chaotic board where your largest tile floats in the middle, gets surrounded, and becomes unmergeable. That’s how a 2048 game ends at 200 points.
When to break the rule
Sometimes you have to press up. Specifically: when your bottom row is full of tiles that can’t merge with anything to their left, you have no other option. When that happens:
- Press up ONCE.
- Immediately press down to restore your corner anchor.
- Try to recover the staircase as fast as possible.
Two up-presses in a row is almost always a death spiral. One up-press is usually salvageable. Pressing up should feel like an emergency, not a tool.
Score milestones
- 500-1,000: you’ve gotten the basics. A 64 or 128 in your corner.
- 2,000-5,000: you’re committing to the corner strategy. A 256 or 512 anchored.
- 10,000-20,000: clean corner play. You’ve probably hit 1024 once and lost the run before 2048.
- 20,000+: a 2048 tile and you kept going. Strong sustained discipline.
- 50,000+: a 4096 tile. Most players never see this.
